What is Repentance? | Changing Your Definitions

by Bob Hamp

You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'  "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Matthew 5:21–22 (emphasis added)

“You never bring me flowers anymore,” she said, tears flowing freely.

He listened with eagerness; his love for her had him quickly running through the GPS in his mind. Where was the nearest flower shop? He narrowed it down, already mentally on a mission. He hugged her and assured her that she was wrong, he still loved her, and he promised to do a better job of showing it to her in the future.

The next night he arrived home from work at 8:30 pm with a beautiful bouquet of flowers in his hand. Quite pleased with himself, he handed them to her.

Shoving them away, with tears flowing again, she passionately cried, “I didn’t want you to bring me flowers!”

When we misunderstand how God sees things, He can appear to be contradictory. First He orders Israel to assemble together, to celebrate feasts and to give a variety of offerings.  Then in Amos 5:21, He tells them, “I hate your feasts, and I can’t stand your assemblies.”  Is He confused, or have we misunderstood something?

God has designed us to be a certain kind of person. People look for orders to follow, God looks for us to become the kind of people He designed us to be. People who naturally respond to God in celebration. How we define what God is after in our lives has a profound effect on our ability to relate to Him. We must first change our definitions before we can even understand what else might need to change.

Much of Jesus’ ministry was aimed at changing the way men had defined the things God wanted. Repentance—changing the way I see—allows me to see the world more the way God sees it. When that happens, I begin to define things more the way He does. Now we can begin to walk together; now not only can I please God, I can relax and become the person He created me to be.

1.  What do you think God is asking of you at this point in your life?

2.  Has God ever shown you something that completely changed the way you saw your circumstances or yourself?

3.  What influences in your life have shaped how you understand how God relates to you?

"Just be...."

When I was born again, (08.08.2004) the Lord showed me a quick snap-shot of who He created me to be. I was humbled, floored and in awe of how different it looked in relation to my prior outlook. Soon after this revelation, I started trying to "do" the things He had planned - on my own accord.......Over the past four years, He has showed me how to relax and let Him work out the person He created me to "be"! Just Be!!!

hmmm...

I imagine a Man that has designed a widget that has the potential to change the world. He is awarded a patent and begins to form a company. His employees praise him and shower him with accolades for his widget. At first, he loves the attention. But after six months he realizes they haven't sold a single widget. He is angered and brings his employees together for a meeting. He sets out his vision for what the company's focus is and redirects his employees. Widget man wants his employees to share his dream of seeing a widget in every home on earth. Focus on the widget, not the widget maker.

I'm not sure about the theology of this, but at some point in our walk does Father want us to focus on building the Kingdom rather than what the Kingdom is to us? We have to understand the King's vision in order to help build the Kingdom don't we? I pray that I have the Father's vision for his Kingdom today!

A new perspective...

This is one of the things God is doing in my own life - to see differently. Seeing things differently - regardless of my own understanding - ultimately leads to my trusting Him more completely, even when I don't have the big picture.

In my own life, I can see how God's hand has fashioned my spiritual walk in ways I would have never seen or understood had I known them prior to or during the times I was going through.

Understanding....

We go through our daily lives, most of the time on a routine we've gotten so used to because it's what we've done and the same way we've done it for so long. We do the same things every day at the same time in the same way.

Then, there comes that one day when something breaks that routine and you're having to scramble to get back on it, never realizing that God is trying to get a hold of us, trying to shake us loose of what we've become accustomed to. He wants our attention.

It's that same routine that has us going home at the end of our day and we think to ourselves, "what did I really accomplish today?" "Did I do everything I could have today to make it a productive day."

I know how that goes because I went through that for so long, getting used to doing the same things at the same time and in the same way. I never stopped to realize that, the things I did, effected the people who worked around me because when I finished a task it would be passed on and another phase of it would be complete. If my part wasn't done correctly, it would effect the next person trying to do their part.

The point is, God doesn't want our lives for Him to be routine, He doesn't want the same prayer or the same thing said every single day. He wants our real thoughts, our real problems, just the way we'd voice our concerns to a friend. God wants us to sit down in silence, nothing on the television or the radio and just talk to Him.

From my own experience, I know He has brought me closer to Him by turning my life from routine into everything but routine.
